SOMNIA-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS
1. Dreams are how Sleep chooses you. What might draw your character into Somnia— a wound, a wish, a weakness? Would they follow the dream, or run from it?
Earlier in her life, Caitlyn may have wished for peace, but now her wish is justice. While her wish includes the act of retribution, it isn't necessarily motivated by the thought of pure revenge, but rather, she sees it as a hard barrier to achieving the peace that she still desires deep in her heart.
Cait has already proven to let nothing stop her from achieving her goals and will stain her hands in order to force her wish to happen. She would walk toward something that promised her this wish, but she would do so with a wary suspicion - she's not one to let empty promises fool her into letting down her guard.
2. Somnia is a slow unraveling—of worlds, and of selves. How does your character respond to fear, transformation, and losing control? Do they fight, adapt, collapse?
Caitlyn idealizes order above most things. While she can go 'off book' in situations where she believes that she is morally correct, she is guided by her strong sense of justice, which is tied to a foundation of order. So, considering this, she would respond to an unraveling with trying to assert control over the situation and over herself. She would try to hold the pieces together as best she can - until everything breaks, or until it breaks her.
3. Connection is the only constant. What kind of bonds does your character form— fast and burning, slow and wary, deep and desperate? How might that shape their time in this world?
Cait forms loose connections easily enough through being generally pleasant and direct, though she's usually an outsider in her own circles with few exceptions, so it's likely difficult for her to casually bond with people, and her deeper relationships require time and a mutual history to bloom.
That being said, when pushed into extreme situations, she bonds surprisingly quickly with people because she is incredibly reliable in a crisis. When forced to trust someone immediately, if that person also proves themselves to be someone she can depend on, she will connect with them hard, as proven by her relationship with Vi.
4. What are two major forces in your character’s personality that are often in conflict? (Ex: logic vs emotion, power vs guilt, obedience vs rage, etc.)
The others vs the self.
Caitlyn is very strongly motivated to do the right thing and ultimately wants to bring peace to the people around her. She wants to do things the 'right' way, and is horrified when people are mistreated, especially without justification.
Jinx murdering her mother made things personal. Caitlyn could no longer separate the good of the people from her own emotions and acted out of guilt (for not killing Jinx when she had the chance) and rage. Her complicated feelings bled into her desire to make the world a better place, and resulted in her acting less out of the interest of the people and more out of the pain in her heart.
The insidious thing about this mindset is that it is very easy to justify her actions to align with her former goals: after all, protecting people can mean strong border control, routine raids, and threatening suspects with arrest without trial. So in a way, Caitlyn does not recognize this conflict within herself - but at her core, she knows something isn't right, and that misalignment haunts her as she sinks further and further into her role as the general.
